Sixth Edition of
the English Translation of the Quran Strengthens Its Global Presence
The sixth edition of the English
translation of the Quran, Glorious Quran, by Indian scholar Dr. Zafar-ul-Islam
Khan, a member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, has recently been
published.
This brings the total number of
editions released in just two years since its first publication in 2023 to six:
three editions featuring both the Arabic text and English translation, and
three editions containing the English translation alone.
The translation is distinguished
by its use of clear, contemporary English and is based exclusively on the
earliest and most authentic Arabic exegeses, the Prophet’s biography, military
campaigns (maghazi), Islamic history, and authoritative Arabic lexicons. Dr.
Khan aimed to present the Quran’s message to the world as it was understood by
the earliest generations of Muslims, avoiding later translations, late
commentaries, and non-Arabic sources.
Global Acclaim for the Translation
The translation maintains full
neutrality in its main text, footnotes, and appendices regarding sectarian or
doctrinal differences, steering clear of grammatical and jurisprudential
disputes. The translator authored approximately 2,500 footnotes and supplemented
them with an introduction to the Quran, the Prophet’s biography, explanations
of Islamic terms, and a detailed Quranic index, making this edition a
comprehensive Islamic encyclopedia for readers seeking a thorough understanding
of Islam.
Over a 12-year period, Dr. Khan
emphasized the Quran’s guidance in contemporary contexts, addressing issues
related to Muslim minorities, peace, terrorism, and jihad. The translation has
received widespread international recognition, with distinguished reviews in
multiple countries.
Al Jazeera described it as a
“complete introduction to Islam,” while London-based Muslim News wrote: “This
is one of the best English translations of the Quran, making its understanding
straightforward.”
Professor Abdul Majid Qazi of
Aligarh Muslim University noted that the translation demonstrates “mature
insight and extensive knowledge,” adding that it and its supplements
“constitute a concise Islamic encyclopedia.” Former university director and
thinker Najeeb Jang called it “the best of the best,” while Professor Muhammad
Qutbuddin of Jawaharlal Nehru University praised it as “a unique and standard
English translation,” highlighting its accuracy, clarity, simplicity, and
impact. Islamic Voice newspaper in Bangalore described it as “an essential
source for those wishing to deeply understand the Quran and Islamic teachings.”
A 12-Year Encyclopedic Effort
Palestinian thinker Dr. Muhammad
Makram Balawi called the translation “the best of all translations he has
seen.” Professor Akhtar Al-Wasi of Aligarh Muslim University described it as “a
solid scholarly achievement,” distinct from traditional exegeses and achieving
“true representation of Islam in the modern age.” Professor Abdul Rahim Qadwai,
in a review for the Muslim World Book Review (UK), stated that “this
translation is entirely accurate and skillfully presents the original text.”
Islamic thinker Abdullah Tariq deemed it “undoubtedly superior to all previous
translations,” calling it “a priceless addition to religious literature,
released at the right time.” Shakil Rasheed, editor-in-chief of Mumbai Urdu
News, described it as “unparalleled.”
