Increasing hostility toward Muslims in
France raises concerns: Study reveals systemic discrimination and serious
effects on youth and religious freedoms

A recent study conducted by the Ifop
Institute on behalf of the Grand Mosque of Paris, and exclusively published by
Libération, has revealed that hostility toward Muslims in France has reached
alarming levels
.

The study, which surveyed 1,005 Muslims
living in major cities, exposed systemic, multidimensional discrimination
deeply rooted in French society
.

82% of
French Muslims stated that hatred against them has become “a widespread
phenomenon,” while 66% reported experiencing racist behavior in the past five
years—three times the rate among the general population
.

The study highlighted that Muslim youth are
the most affected, with 76% of those under 25 reporting experiences of racism
.

It also underscored the religious dimension
of discrimination: 50% of those affected believe their religion is the main
reason, while 41% of non-practicing Muslims pointed to their religious
affiliation as the cause of discriminatory treatment
.

The survey further revealed that
discrimination spans all social classes, including the middle class and
professionally integrated individuals, and even supposedly safe spaces—such as
schools, police services, and public services—are not immune
.

Access to employment and housing has been
significantly impacted, with 51% reporting discrimination when seeking jobs and
46% when applying for housing, compared to only 7% and 6% among non-Muslims
.

Concern is widespread among French Muslims
due to this phenomenon: 64% fear restrictions on their religious freedom, 51%
fear physical assault, rising to 66% among veiled women
.

The study also showed declining trust in
official institutions, with 66% not considering filing a complaint and even
fewer turning to associations or mosques for support
.

The Grand Imam of the Paris Mosque,
Chems-Eddine Hafiz, sounded the alarm, calling for Muslims’ rights to be
“placed at the forefront of the fight against Islamophobia,” considering it a
matter of national security and republican cohesion, not merely a social issue
.

Hafiz urged concrete measures for monitoring
and sanctioning discrimination in employment, housing, and public services,
along with enhanced training for government employees
.

This study comes amid rising tensions
following unfortunate incidents, including the killing of Abou Bakr Cissé at a
mosque in the Gard region in April, the attack on Hicham Merai in May in the
Var region, and the placement of pig heads in front of nine mosques in the
Île-de-France region in September
.

Hafiz emphasized that these acts reflect a
hatred that is sometimes exploited by foreign powers to weaken France, making
it a strategic national issue rather than merely a social one
.

The study also highlighted the
radicalization of public discourse about Islam, which contributes to
legitimizing and fueling this discrimination
.

In response to the survey, political
scientist François Kraus from the Ifop Institute noted that hostility toward
Muslims is the main factor affecting Muslims’ experiences in all aspects of
their lives, preferring this term over “Islamophobia” to avoid controversy
.
