Hundreds of Muslims hold communal iftar and perform Taraweeh prayers in Times
Square
Hundreds of Muslims gathered in
Times Square in New York to hold a communal iftar and perform Taraweeh prayers
as part of an annual event organized since 2022.
Despite the rain and cold
weather, participants assembled on the third day of the holy month in the heart
of Manhattan, spreading out across the square to break their fast before
performing Maghrib, Isha, and Taraweeh prayers in a scene that received wide
interaction on social media.
The event included a collective
recitation of the Quran and speeches by imams and religious scholars
highlighting the values of Ramadan, the role of Muslims in society, and the
importance of compassion, solidarity, and coexistence in a multicultural city.
This occasion remains one of New
York’s most prominent Ramadan events and comes amid notable social and cultural
developments in the city following the appointment of Zahraan Mamdani as
mayor—the first Muslim to hold this position in the city’s history.
Social media users circulated
video clips documenting the iftar and Taraweeh atmosphere, drawing the
attention of passersby, many of whom paused to observe and learn about the
event—a reflection of the cultural and religious diversity that characterizes New
York.
