Qatar Launches
Digital Encyclopedia Specializing in Quranic Recitations to Promote Quranic
Sciences
The Qatari Ministry of Awqaf and
Islamic Affairs has launched a specialized Quranic encyclopedia titled
“Encyclopedia of Quranic Recitations and Their Sciences” through the Islamic
Network website (IslamWeb), in a qualitative step aimed at strengthening the
presence of Quranic sciences in the digital realm.
High-Level
Scholarly Compilation
The ministry stated in a press
release on Tuesday, January 20, that the preparation, compilation, and
organization of the encyclopedia were undertaken by Sheikh Ahmed Issa
Al-Masrawi, former Chief of Egyptian Qira’at (Quranic recitation schools), to
serve as a comprehensive scholarly reference. The encyclopedia presents the
sciences of Quranic recitations in a contemporary, systematic approach, meeting
the needs of researchers, students, and Quran enthusiasts across various levels
of knowledge.
Purpose
and Scientific Content of the Encyclopedia
The ministry indicated that the
encyclopedia is founded on a solid scholarly premise: that Quranic recitations
are mutawatir (widely transmitted) methods of pronouncing the words of the
Quran, authentically traced to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through
reliable chains of narration, with scholars unanimously agreeing on their
validity and rules.
The encyclopedia adopts a
methodology that balances simplicity for beginners with specialized scientific
depth, integrating both narration and understanding in a well-structured
knowledge framework, while presenting the content digitally in an organized manner
that facilitates accessibility and comprehension.
Rigorous
Scholarly Methodology
The encyclopedia relies on
precise scholarly methodologies, benefiting from the efforts of Quranic
recitation experts across the ages, led by Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Issa Al-Masrawi,
whose extensive experience enriched the content and ensured its scientific accuracy.
Comprehensive
and Integrated Content
The encyclopedia aims to provide
reliable material that combines authenticity and systematic methodology,
starting with introducing the ten imams of recitation, their narrators, and
chains of transmission; explaining the principles and variations (usul and
furūsh); detailing methods of narration; and addressing major scholarly issues
related to recitations, such as the difference between the Seven Letters and
mutawatir recitations, as well as the most widely transmitted recitations in
the Islamic world.
It also seeks to facilitate the
study of Quranic recitations, enabling students and educational institutions to
access trusted scholarly content in one place, contributing to the preservation
and electronic documentation of Islamic recitation heritage, while keeping pace
with the digital transformation of knowledge dissemination. The platform also
serves as an open educational tool supporting academic study, Quran
memorization circles, and specialized research.
Comprehensive
Coverage of Quranic Topics
The encyclopedia covers
recitation methods, chains of narration, rules of Tajweed, and legitimate
differences between recitations, along with commentaries on canonical
recitation texts such as Al-Shatibiyyah, Al-Durra, and Al-Tayyibah, with
rigorous scholarly documentation of the sources and foundations relied upon by
this art over the centuries.
The Encyclopedia of Quranic
Recitations and Their Sciences has received wide acclaim from officials and
Quranic scholars, who considered its launch a significant addition to online
Quranic content and an important resource for stimulating academic research in
the field of recitations, making this precise science accessible in an
organized and user-friendly format for both the general Muslim public and
specialists.
