Algeria
Launches Qualifying Rounds for the International Qur’an Memorization Award with
Broad Participation from Over 48 Countries
On Monday, the
qualifying rounds of the International Algeria Award for the Memorization and
Recitation of the Holy Qur’an were launched in the Algerian capital, marking
the start of the 21st edition of the competition. These rounds are a prelude to
the final stage, which is expected to see the participation of representatives
from more than 48 countries from around the world.
In statements, the
Algerian Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments indicated that the number
of participating countries is likely to increase in the coming hours to reach
approximately 50 countries.
The minister
affirmed that this edition reflects the growing stature that the International
Algeria Award for the Memorization and Recitation of the Holy Qur’an has
attained on the international stage, as well as the expanding recognition and
interest it has garnered.
The qualifying
rounds are being conducted via remote video conferencing technology at Algerian
embassies, consulates general, and diplomatic missions abroad, under the
supervision of an international jury comprising four judges from Algeria, in
addition to one judge from the Syrian Arab Republic and another from the
Sultanate of Oman, as explained by Minister Belmehdi.
In the same context,
he noted that the competition, across its various editions, constitutes a
genuine opportunity to discover new Qur’an reciters and outstanding talents
from within Algeria and beyond. It also reflects the advanced level Algeria has
reached in serving the Holy Qur’an through mosques, Qur’anic schools, zawiyas,
and Qur’anic recitation institutions.
He recalled that the
Algerian state has continued to support this competition by introducing new
categories and increasing the monetary value of the prize, thereby enhancing
its standing and reinforcing official care for those who carry the Book of
Allah.
The qualifying
rounds are scheduled to continue until next Wednesday, after which 20
contestants from various countries will be selected to participate in the final
stage of the competition, to be held in conjunction with the commemoration of
Al-Isra and Al-Mi‘raj.
