Tragedy
in Mauritania: Three Prominent Figures of the Chinguetti Mahdara Tradition
Killed in a Fatal Road Accident
Three senior
scholars of the Chinguetti Mahdara tradition passed away on Wednesday evening,
December 24, 2025, following a tragic road accident on one of the main routes
to and from the city of Akjoujt, approximately 40 kilometers south of the city.
The accident
resulted in the deaths of Dr. Mohamed El-Amin Ould Mohamed El-Moustapha, Dr.
Izdibieh Ould Al-Imam, and الأستاذ Mohamed El-Amin Ould Abdel Jabbar, after a collision
between two vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prado. The Prado was driven
by political notable Hussein Ould Sheikh, who survived the crash.
Dr. Mohamed El-Amin
Ould Mohamed El-Moustapha was regarded as one of the most prominent literary
figures and intellectual symbols associated with the Islamic movement in
Mauritania. He was widely known for his significant scholarly and literary
contributions, as well as his influential presence in the country’s cultural
and intellectual landscape, in addition to his educational role within the
Chinguetti Mahdara tradition.
This painful tragedy
has cast deep sorrow and profound grief across scholarly and Mahdara circles,
as well as among the students and admirers of the deceased, in recognition of
the high academic and symbolic standing they held.
The International
Union of Muslim Scholars extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to the
dear Mauritanian people, and to the families, relatives, and students of the
deceased, praying that Allah envelop them in His vast mercy, grant them
spacious gardens in Paradise, console their loved ones, and replace the loss of
the الأمة with goodness through its scholars.
Indeed, to Allah we
belong and to Him we shall return.
