Appointment of Mufti Dr. Safi
Arbagush as Head of Religious Affairs in Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
announced the appointment of Istanbul’s Mufti, Dr. Safi Arbagush, as the Head
of Religious Affairs in Turkey, succeeding the former president, Ali Erbaş,
following the completion of his term.

This decision was published in the Turkish
Official Gazette early Thursday.

Dr. Arbagush is considered one of Turkey’s
prominent academic and religious figures. He was born in 1967 in Amasya, in the
north of the country, and graduated from the Imam Hatip High School in 1985
before completing his studies at the Faculty of Sharia at Marmara University in
1990.

He began his academic career at the same
university in 1992 as a research assistant, earning his master’s degree in 1994
and his doctorate in 2001. He received the title of Assistant Professor in 2008
and was promoted to full Professor in 2014. He also served as Vice Dean of the
Faculty of Sharia at Marmara University between 2011 and 2021.

In mid-October 2021, Dr. Arbagush was
appointed as Istanbul’s Mufti by presidential decree, becoming one of the
country’s most prominent religious figures, before his recent promotion to head
the Directorate of Religious Affairs.
