Sheikh Safwat Khalilović Honored in Bosnia with the Hassan
Effendi Shkapur Award
The
Islamic Community and Dar al-Ifta in the Central Bosnia region (Zenicko
muftijstvo) – one of the institutions affiliated with the Islamic Community in
Bosnia and Herzegovina – awarded the “Hassan Effendi Shkapur Foundation” Prize
for the year 1447 AH / 2025 CE to Sheikh Dr. Safwat Effendi Khalilović, a
member of the Board of Trustees of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.
The award recognizes his outstanding scientific accomplishments and
distinguished contributions to promoting Islamic culture and serving Islam in
his country.
The
award was presented in conjunction with the celebration of the Prophet
Muhammad’s birthday, with the ceremony held on September 4 in the city of
Tešanj, located in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina.

blessed occasion, the International Union of Muslim Scholars extended its
heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Safwat Khalilović, emphasizing that this
recognition is well-deserved for his scholarly and advocacy efforts and his
continuous service to Islam and Muslims.
Pioneering Scientific Achievements
Dr.
Safwat Khalilović is considered one of the leading scholars and academics in
Bosnia and Herzegovina. He serves as a university professor at the Faculty of
Islamic Education at Zenica University and engages in extensive religious and
cultural activities. He has also contributed significantly to the fields of
Qur’anic exegesis, the Prophetic biography (Seerah), and Qur’anic anthropology.
Dr.
Khalilović has authored approximately twenty books, most notably “The Prophetic
Biography in its Iron Garb – A Contemporary Reading of the Events of the
Prophetic Life”, which has been translated into nine global languages, and “The
Complete Qur’anic Exegesis in Bosnian”, the first full Qur’anic exegesis
published in the Bosnian language. The work gained widespread popularity,
reaching four editions within a single year, reflecting its scholarly and
cultural significance.
In a
special interview with the Union’s media office, Dr. Khalilović explained that
“preparing this exegesis took eleven years, with the assistance of a select
group of scholars, including Dr. Ahmad al-Raysuni, Sheikh Muhammad al-Hassan
al-Deddu, Dr. Ali al-Salabi, and Dr. Ali Mohieddin al-Qaradaghi, along with a
team of scholars in Bosnia who followed its progress.”
About the Award and Its Founder
The
Hassan Effendi Shkapur Award was established in 2005 and is granted annually to
scholars and thinkers who have made outstanding intellectual, cultural, and
scientific contributions, with winners selected from among dozens of nominees.
Sheikh
Hassan Effendi Shkapur (1913–1975) was one of Bosnia’s prominent scholars
during the communist era. He mastered several languages, including Arabic,
Turkish, Persian, Russian, and Italian. Despite the religious restrictions of
the time, he translated Sahih al-Bukhari with detailed commentary, leaving a
legacy as a symbol of knowledge and steadfastness in faith.
