Thousands of Italians Demonstrate in Support of Palestine and
Fleets to Break the Gaza Blockade
Around
15,000 people participated in a large demonstration in the city of Catania in
southern Italy, in support of Palestine and the Global Steadfastness Fleet,
which continues its journey toward Gaza for the fourth consecutive day with the
aim of breaking the Zionist blockade on the Strip.
Protesters
gathered at the Port of Catania, the meeting point for boats joining the fleet
from Italy, before marching toward the city center, waving Palestinian flags
and holding banners with slogans supporting Palestine and the fleet, such as
“Freedom for Palestine,” “Stop the Genocide,” and “From the River to the Sea,
Palestine Will Be Free.”
The
phrase “Gaza, We Are Coming” was displayed on a large screen in Federico di
Svevia Square at the conclusion of the event.
The
Global Steadfastness Fleet continues its journey in the Mediterranean Sea after
about 20 ships departed from the Port of Barcelona, Spain, last Sunday,
followed by another convoy from the Port of Genoa in northwestern Italy.
A third
convoy from Tunisia is expected to join next Sunday before continuing toward
Gaza.
The
fleet includes a coalition of international organizations, including the
“Freedom Flotilla Coalition,” the “Global Gaza Movement,” the “Steadfastness
Convoy,” and the Malaysian “Nusantara Steadfastness Organization.”
The
Zionist occupation has imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip for 18 years,
resulting in the loss of shelter for approximately 1.5 million Palestinians out
of 2.2 million after their homes were destroyed in the recent war.
Since
March 2, the occupation forces have closed all crossings into the Strip,
preventing the delivery of humanitarian aid, while recently allowing only very
limited quantities that do not meet the minimum needs of the population, amid
ongoing famine and attacks on aid trucks by gangs protected by the occupation,
according to the Gaza Government Media Office.
