Libya’s “Omar al-Mukhtar Fleet” to Join International “Fleet of
Steadfastness” to Break Gaza Siege
Libyan
activists announced on Friday the preparations for the departure of the “Omar
al-Mukhtar Fleet” from Libyan shores to join the international “Fleet of
Steadfastness”, which aims to break the 18-year blockade imposed on the Gaza
Strip.
The
announcement came during a press conference held at Algeria Square in central
Tripoli, attended by national and human rights figures, including former Prime
Minister Omar al-Hassi, alongside Arab and foreign supporters.
Al-Hassi
stated that the Libyan fleet will carry Libyan and international activists, men
and women, committed to a peaceful humanitarian mission far from any form of
violence. He stressed that the primary goal is to end the siege that has caused
a catastrophic famine in Gaza.
He
explained that the international fleet consists of more than 50 vessels of
various sizes, loaded with relief supplies including food, medicine, water,
clothing, and winter blankets. “Palestine no longer needs passing speeches, but
rather a serious international project that supports its people’s rights,” he
added.
Al-Hassi
noted that the departure date of the Libyan fleet will be set once the
international convoys pass by Libyan waters, likely at the beginning of next
week.
Last
Sunday, around 20 ships sailed from Barcelona, Spain, followed by others from
Genoa, Italy, while a third convoy is expected to depart from Tunisia in the
coming days before continuing toward Gaza.
The
“Fleet of Steadfastness” includes several international coalitions, most
notably the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Gaza Movement, the Convoy of
Steadfastness, and Malaysia’s Nusantara Resilience Organization.
This
initiative comes amid the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza, backed by the
United States, since October 7, 2023, which has so far killed more than 64,000
people and injured 162,000, mostly women and children, in addition to thousands
missing and millions displaced. Meanwhile, famine continues to claim the lives
of hundreds, including dozens of children.
