Myanmar Army Kills 7,100 Rohingya
Muslims Since 2021 Coup
A report issued by the United Nations Office of the
High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Tuesday revealed that the Myanmar
army has killed approximately 7,100 Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State
since the military coup in 2021, including one-third women and children.
The report described the escalating crisis in Rakhine
as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed by the army in 2017, noting a
rise in killings, torture, village burnings, and mass forced displacement.
It recorded the arrest of at least 29,560 individuals
for political reasons, confirming that more than 22,000 remain in detention
without access to fair trial guarantees in military-controlled courts.
The report also highlighted the displacement of
hundreds of thousands of civilians since hostilities escalated in Rakhine, with
around 150,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh since November 2023, joining
nearly one million others who had previously sought refuge in the country.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk
stated that civilians from the Rohingya and Rakhine communities “continue to
suffer the consequences of hostilities, amid widespread patterns of arbitrary
attacks by the military,” emphasizing the army’s involvement in forced
displacement, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, property destruction,
and repeated atrocities.
Türk noted that the recurrence of these violations
occurs under near-total impunity, adding that videos and images documenting the
2017 atrocities are being repeated.
In light of these crimes, the High Commissioner
renewed his call for “the full situation in Myanmar to be referred to the
International Criminal Court by the Security Council,” stressing the need for
urgent measures to end the violence and provide immediate humanitarian
assistance to those affected.
Türk emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian
funding to meet civilian needs and urged member states to pressure relevant
parties to allow aid access and support international efforts to hold those
responsible for violations of international law accountable.
