Widespread Anger in
India After Muslim Man in His Fifties Beaten to Death by Hindu Mob in Uttar
Pradesh

Muslim citizen Mushtaq
Ahmed (50) was killed on Friday evening after being brutally assaulted by a
group of Hindu villagers in Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, northern India,
on allegations of being a suspected thief.

Videos circulating on
social media showed the victim being beaten with sticks by several people,
while crowds around them chanted, before he collapsed to the ground as the
attackers continued the assault. His body was found the following Saturday
morning lying in the area.

Suspicions Over Police
Role

Relatives of the victim
expressed doubts regarding the police’s handling of the case, affirming that
Ahmed had visited the police station earlier on the day of his death concerning
a family matter, carrying with him an amount of 50,000 rupees.

Hours later, his
motorcycle was found in a nearby village and taken by police to the station,
before his body was discovered the next day without notifying the family or
presenting the body to them before the autopsy.

Arrest of Suspects

The victim’s brother,
Muhammad Zubair, stated that the assault involved religious slurs, adding that
between 15 and 20 people took part in the attack. He confirmed that Ahmed tried
to convince them he was a resident of a nearby village, but they continued
beating him to death.

For its part, the
police announced that they had reviewed the circulated footage and opened a
case based on the family’s complaint, confirming that five individuals were
arrested after being identified in the videos, while investigations are still
ongoing.
