On Thursday, August 24, 2023, the Islamic World Organization for Education, Science, and Culture “ISESCO” launched an initiative titled "Read It to Understand It" in response to the recurring incidents of burning copies of the Quran in several European countries.
This was announced by the Director-General of "ISESCO", Salem bin Mohammed Al-Malik, during the opening session of an international conference in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, entitled: "Framing Freedoms in Accordance with Islamic Values and Principles of International Law". He emphasized that the initiative is a response to the burning of the Quran, calling for collaborative efforts to highlight the true face of Islamic civilization and confront these deplorable campaigns.
He pointed out that the initiative is "characterized by comprehensiveness, precision, and seriousness as a positive reaction to these deplorable campaigns."
Recently in Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands, incidents of disrespect to the Quran have occurred by far-right extremists in front of embassies of Islamic countries, provoking official and popular Arab and Muslim outrage, in addition to formal summonses of diplomats from the two countries in multiple Arab nations.
Denmark had announced its intention to ban the burning of the Quran after a series of desecrations in the Scandinavian country, where the government will introduce a bill "prohibiting the improper treatment of items of significant religious importance to the religious community."
On July 26, the United Nations adopted a resolution, drafted by Morocco, condemning all acts of violence against sacred books as a violation of international law.
