Istanbul Conference Highlights Forcibly Disappeared Women and
Women of Gaza
On
Sunday, the Turkish city of Istanbul witnessed the launch of the International
Hawaa Organization’s conference under the slogan “For Her… A Call for the
Missing,” with the participation of institutions and influential figures from
several Arab and Islamic countries, including Turkey, Palestine, Egypt, Syria,
Sudan, Turkestan, and Yemen.
The
conference focuses on the issue of forcibly disappeared women and supporting
their families, while also shedding light on the dire humanitarian conditions
faced by the women of Gaza under blockade and continuous bombardment.
In its
statement, the organization said the conference constitutes a unified platform
to bring together influential voices to defend women’s rights and urge the
international community to take practical steps to protect them.
The
program includes testimonies and real-life experiences of women who have been
subjected to enforced disappearance or political imprisonment, where
participants recount their suffering in prisons and the psychological and
physical torture, as well as the deprivation of basic rights, they endured.
The
conference also connects these experiences to the plight of women in Gaza, who
face bombardment, displacement, and shortages of food and medicine.
Organizers
affirmed that the conference seeks to build Arab and international alliances to
pressure governments and global institutions to stop violations, while linking
humanitarian efforts to the Palestinian cause, particularly regarding women’s
rights in education, healthcare, and food security.
Participants
stressed the necessity of unifying legal and humanitarian efforts to protect
women and ensure that their voices reach the international stage, calling for
the establishment of effective follow-up mechanisms to implement decisions and
recommendations on women’s rights, and emphasizing that the suffering of women
in conflict zones, especially in Gaza, must remain present and heard at all
levels.
