After a Thousand
Days in Prison, Ghannouchi: “Autocracy and Exclusion Are Two Sides of the Same
Coin”
Tunisian Ennahda Movement
leader, Rached Ghannouchi, said on Sunday, marking a thousand days since his
imprisonment, that “autocracy and exclusion are two sides of the same coin,”
calling for adherence to “peaceful struggle for a free Tunisia.”
Ghannouchi’s statements were
made in a message published by the Ennahda Movement on its official Facebook
page. The former speaker of the Tunisian parliament affirmed that “his ordeal
has become a measure of the commitment of different parties to the principles
of democracy and citizenship.”
He added that since its
founding, the Ennahda Movement “has never imposed a veto against any party,
inside or outside the country,” noting that “the mistake was not in recognizing
a political party, but in arresting another,” emphasizing that the movement
believes “freedom encompasses everyone.”
Ghannouchi has been in prison
since his arrest on April 17, 2023, following a raid on his home, on charges of
inciting threats to state security. He has received several prison sentences in
various cases.
In a related development,
Tunisian authorities arrested former lawyer and parliamentarian Seifeddine
Makhlouf following his deportation from Algeria.
Additionally, families of
several “political” prisoners from diverse backgrounds announced last Wednesday
the formation of a coordination body aimed at “unifying efforts” to advocate
for their release.
The announcement came on January
14, 2026, a symbolic date coinciding with the fifteenth anniversary of the fall
of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s regime following a popular
uprising.
