Death of Preacher
and Scholar Habib Omar bin Hamid Al-Jilani, Shafi’i Mufti of Mecca

The Islamic Ummah was struck
with grief on Friday by the passing of the prominent Yemeni preacher Habib Omar
bin Hamid bin Abdulhadi Al-Jilani, Shafi’i Mufti of Mecca, at the age of 76,
while en route to Jakarta on a scholarly and da‘wa mission. His departure left
a profound impact and widespread sorrow in the hearts of his students and
admirers both within Yemen and abroad.

The late scholar—may Allah grant
him vast mercy—was one of the great intellectual and religious figures who
dedicated their lives to serving Islam, spreading religious knowledge, and
teaching Shafi’i jurisprudence. He followed the Prophetic methodology in his
preaching and guidance, combining knowledge with practice, and religious
calling with spiritual purification, remaining away from the spotlight while
staying close to hearts, leaving a deep and lasting effect on his students and
society.

According to Yemeni media
sources, Habib Omar Al-Jilani was born in 1950 into a scholarly family with a
long-standing intellectual and Sufi heritage, which contributed to his early
academic and religious formation. He later distinguished himself through his
mastery of Shafi’i jurisprudence and his influential teaching presence.

In his youth, he moved to Mecca
to pursue and disseminate knowledge, where he gained widespread recognition,
becoming a reference point for students of knowledge and serving as Shafi’i
Mufti. He was also prominent in Sufi circles across the Arab world, renowned
for his moderation, wisdom, and high moral and educational standards.

The late scholar was known for
his extensive missionary travels beyond the Arabian Peninsula, particularly to
Southeast Asia and Africa, especially Indonesia and Kenya. His scholarly and
da‘wa connections also extended to Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, which he
visited several times, spreading knowledge and building bridges between
scholars and students of learning.

With the passing of Habib Omar
Al-Jilani, the Ummah has lost a pious scholar and sincere preacher, leaving
behind a lasting intellectual and educational legacy and an indelible impact on
those who knew him and studied under him.

We pray to Allah to envelop the
deceased in His vast mercy, grant him a spacious place in Paradise, and bestow
patience and solace upon his family, students, and admirers.
