International Book Fair Returns After Liberation: Culture at the Heart of
Rebuilding Awareness

Syria is preparing to launch the
Damascus International Book Fair in its first edition after liberation, in a
national cultural event that reflects the return of culture to the forefront of
the public scene. The event underscores the role of books in strengthening
national unity, reinforcing Syria’s civilizational identity, and reconnecting
the country with the world through the gateway of knowledge.

The fair will open on February 5
at the Damascus Fairgrounds and will run for ten days, with the participation
of more than 500 publishing houses presenting over 100,000 titles from 35 Arab
and foreign countries, reflecting the scale of Arab and international
engagement with this cultural event.

A Slogan
That Reflects the Reclaiming of Narrative

The fair is held under the
slogan “A History We Write… A History We Read,” symbolizing Syrians’ reclaiming
of their right to write and read their own history, and reinforcing the belief
that books remain a fundamental pillar in building awareness and a safeguard
for social cohesion in the face of ignorance and extremism.

According to the Ministry of
Culture, the fair’s cultural program has been designed to balance depth and
diversity, featuring more than 650 intellectual, literary, and historical
events, with the participation of over 500 writers, thinkers, and researchers.
A significant space has also been dedicated to children and youth, regarded as
the audience of the future and the driving force of the upcoming cultural
renaissance.

Awards
and a Renewed Cultural Presence

The fair will witness the launch
of more than seven cultural awards, including awards for Syrian, Arab, and
international publishers, Best Young Publisher, and Children’s Book Publishers,
in addition to the “Personality of the Fair” Award, alongside the introduction
of accompanying cultural initiatives.

The event will also feature
various sections, including a cultural salon hosting prominent intellectual
figures, public seminars, a booksellers’ market, and pavilions dedicated to
Arabic calligraphy and the arts, as well as integrating modern technology and
artificial intelligence through interactive services and digital displays.

Organizers emphasized that this
edition of the fair carries a cultural and political message, affirming Syria’s
return to its civilizational role. They noted that cultural work in the
post-liberation phase is based on cultural freedom as the foundation of
sustainable knowledge, empowerment, and the building of an authentic ethical
framework, stressing that culture represents the true guarantor of social
coexistence and the strongest bulwark against extremism.
