Thousands of Muslims Displaced in Assam, India, for Project
Linked to Modi-Aligned Billionaire

Indian authorities have displaced around
10,000 Muslims in the Dhubri district of Assam state in northeastern India,
after demolishing the homes of approximately 2,000 families starting last
Sunday. The displacement aims to make way for a thermal power plant project run
by a group owned by billionaire Gautam Adani, a close associate of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi.

During the eviction operations, clashes
erupted between residents and security forces, who used batons to disperse the
protesters.

This move has drawn condemnation from
Muslim lawmakers and opposition figures, who described it as “illegal,”
especially in light of a prior suspension of evictions by the High Court in
Guwahati.

Claims of Targeting Muslims

Residents stated that they had been
living in the area for decades without any previous government asking them to
leave. They affirmed that the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government
is expelling them “because they are Muslims.”

While officials claimed that eviction
notices were distributed before July 6 under the Assam Land and Revenue
Regulation Act of 1886, they noted that each landless family would receive
50,000 rupees, with a promise to resettle them in the “Bhuyejer Alga” village
within the Athani revenue circle.

Harsh Criticism and Accusations of Collusion

Muslim MP Rakibul Hussain described the
operation as “brutal and illegal,” stating: “What is happening is inhumane and
violates the constitution and the law. The government is acting on the orders
of billionaire Adani.” He added, “The Prime Minister lost his mind when Adani’s
son visited the area,” and “poor families were expelled without warning, in
blatant violation of the court’s orders.”

Meanwhile, regional MP Akhil Gogoi, who
was detained while trying to meet with the affected families, accused the
government of using the evictions to win Hindu votes, asserting that “the BJP
government targets minorities simply because they are Muslims.”

Government’s Defense: ‘Eviction Was Peaceful’

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa
Sarma defended the operation, saying: “It was a massive operation and we
expected resistance, but 90% of the people cooperated; the issue was limited to
only 10%.” He added: “There is no such thing as humanitarian eviction. If
people don’t vacate the land after receiving notices, bulldozers will move in.”

International Union of Muslim Scholars

The International Union of Muslim
Scholars is closely monitoring the situation of Muslims in India with deep
concern. It has repeatedly called in official statements and declarations for
an end to exclusionary and discriminatory policies, urging respect for the
constitutional and human rights of Muslim minorities and holding the Indian
government responsible for these repeated violations.
