In a sudden and tragic moment, Professor
Dr. Ahmed Hassan Al-Farouqi
, Head of the Islamic Economics Department at
Damascus University, passed away on Monday, February 9, while participating in
the Fourth Meeting of Sharia Authorities in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

While delivering his speech on
behalf of the participants, Dr. Al-Farouqi suffered a sudden heart attack,
causing him to stop speaking abruptly in front of the audience. Efforts by
attendees to provide immediate assistance were in vain, and he passed away at
the conference venue before he could be transferred to a hospital.

The incident left attendees in
shock, especially as Dr. Al-Farouqi was actively engaged in a scientific
discussion at the time. News of his passing quickly spread across academic and
religious circles, reflecting his prominent status and significant contributions
to the field of Islamic economics.

Academic and Spiritual Tribute

His funeral prayer was held at
the Prophet’s Mosque, and he was buried in Al-Baqi Cemetery, in a scene that
reflected the respect and esteem of the attendees for the late scholar, who was
considered one of the leading academics in Islamic economics in the Arab world.

Distinguished Academic Career

Born in Al-Hasakah, northeastern
Syria, Dr. Ahmed Hassan Al-Farouqi served as the Head of the Islamic Economics
Department at Damascus University, where he contributed to preparing and
mentoring a new generation of researchers and students in this specialized
field that integrates modern economic sciences with Islamic jurisprudence.

Throughout his career, he
focused on the practical aspects of Islamic economics, particularly financial
and monetary transactions in accordance with Islamic law, and was a consistent
presence at specialized scientific seminars and conferences.

Among his most notable works is
the book “Banknotes in Islamic Economics”, in which he addressed contemporary
monetary and financial issues from both a jurisprudential and economic
perspective, making it a key reference for researchers and scholars in the
field.
