Kuala Lumpur Prepares to Host 72 Contestants from 50 Countries
in the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorization Award

The Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, will
host next month the 65th edition of the International Quran Recitation and
Memorization Award (MTHQA), featuring 72 contestants from 50 countries. The
event will take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) under the
theme: “Towards a Civilized Nation (MADANI).”

The event will be officially inaugurated
by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim on August 2nd.

Dr. Mohamed Na’im Mokhtar, Minister of
Religious Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office, explained that 40
participants will compete in the recitation category, while 32 will participate
in the memorization category. This follows an electronic selection stage held
from May 19 to 23, supervised by an expert judging panel to ensure fairness.

A judging panel of 16 judges from
Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Indonesia will evaluate the
participants.

The judging criteria for the recitation
category include Tajweed (Quranic pronunciation rules), melodies, eloquence,
and voice quality. In the memorization category, the focus is on accuracy of
memorization and smoothness of delivery.

Dr. Mohamed Na’im pointed out that the
theme reflects Malaysia’s vision of building a civilized society that combines
spiritual and ethical development with urban progress.

Malaysia has been a leading country in
organizing this event since 1961 and was awarded the Best Quranic Program in
2016 by the State of Kuwait.

The program also includes a unique
initiative featuring a continuous recitation of the Quran starting from KL
Sentral station in Kuala Lumpur and extending to the city of Hat Yai in
Thailand, aiming to set a record for the longest connected Quran recitation
across national borders.

The first-place winner will receive a
cash prize of 40,000 Ringgit, the second place 30,000 Ringgit, and the third
place 20,000 Ringgit, in addition to jewelry gifts presented by the YaPEIM
Foundation.
