Member of the Union
The Council of Scholars of Iraq
concluded a specialized scientific course titled “Maqasid al-Sharia and Its
Applications in the Da‘wah Context”, delivered by His Eminence Dr. Wasfi Ashour
Abu Zaid, member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, on Monday, 21
Sha’ban 1447 AH, corresponding to 9 February 2026, at the Council’s
headquarters in Baghdad.
The course is part of the
Council’s developmental plan aimed at enhancing the academic and methodological
level of students of Islamic knowledge. It also reflects the growing interest
in Maqasid studies and the need for a conscious da‘wah discourse grounded in
the principles and overarching objectives of Sharia, while responding
effectively to contemporary societal challenges.
The course witnessed active
participation from male and female students of Islamic knowledge from Baghdad
and several other Iraqi provinces, demonstrating their eagerness to benefit
from the insights of Maqasid studies and apply them in da‘wah work, education,
and media discourse.
Understanding Maqasid: Depth and Insight
During his lectures, Dr. Wasfi
Ashour Abu Zaid addressed a range of scholarly topics, focusing on the
foundational concept of Maqasid al-Sharia and its role in understanding Islamic
texts and applying them to real-world contexts. He emphasized that neglecting
the Maqasid can lead to misunderstandings or disruptions in da‘wah practice.
He also stressed the importance
of integrating Maqasid principles in da‘wah work, particularly in societies
experiencing rapid intellectual and social transformations. He highlighted the
necessity of maintaining a balance between textual sources and public interest,
as well as between constants and variables, to achieve the Sharia’s overarching
objectives.
Live Questions and Discussions
The course featured active
scholarly engagement from participants through discussions and questions
regarding the mechanisms for implementing Maqasid in the fields of da‘wah,
education, and media. Participants also explored the challenges posed by multiple
intellectual references and the spread of unregulated religious discourse
through social media.
At the conclusion of the course,
certificates of participation were distributed to the students, signed by the
lecturer and stamped by the Council of Scholars of Iraq. Dr. Wasfi Ashour Abu
Zaid was also honored with the Council’s commemorative shield in recognition of
his scholarly contributions and his service to students of Islamic knowledge.
The course was held on the
sidelines of the International Zakat Funds Management Conference, organized by
the Council of Scholars of Iraq in collaboration with Al-Rukiza Foundation and
Al-Khair Foundation, as part of the Council’s efforts to link theoretical
knowledge with practical applications in vital issues affecting society.
