Holds Expanded Meeting to Develop Islamic Education and Strengthen Its Role in

Phnom Penh, January
2, 2026 — As part of official and institutional efforts aimed at advancing
Islamic education and enhancing its educational and pedagogical roles, an
expanded meeting was held on Friday in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, with
the participation of 272 religious and government leaders to discuss the
current state of Islamic education in Cambodia and prospects for its
development.

Developing
Islamic Education

The meeting was held
in the Grand Hall of the Phnom Penh Islamic Center and was organized by the
Association of Khmer Muslim Teachers. Discussions focused on six main
pillars:

1.      Assessing the current state of Islamic education in
Cambodia and diagnosing the conditions of educational institutions.

2.      Identifying the educational and administrative
challenges facing these institutions.

3.      Developing educational curricula in a way that
balances Islamic authenticity with the requirements of the modern era.

4.      Qualifying educational personnel and enhancing their
professional and teaching competencies.

5.      Improving the educational environment and ensuring
stability and quality within institutions.

6.      Strengthening institutional coordination between
Islamic bodies and official authorities to ensure high-quality Islamic
education that keeps pace with contemporary developments while preserving
religious fundamentals.

The Importance
of Islamic Education in Building Individuals and Identity

The meeting was
chaired by Dr. Ousman Hassan, Minister of State in charge and Chairman of the
Board of the Association of Khmer Muslim Teachers, who emphasized in his speech
that Islamic education represents a fundamental pillar in building individuals
and preserving religious identity.

He stressed the
necessity of unifying the efforts of the state, educational institutions,
religious and community organizations to ensure the development of Islamic
education on sustainable institutional foundations.

Broad
Participation

The meeting
witnessed notable participation from various official and educational levels, including:

·     Members of the Senate and the National Assembly.

·     Secretaries of state and their deputies, as well as
government advisors.

·     Provincial imams, directors of education, and district
chiefs.

·     Prominent intellectual and academic figures from
across the country.

This broad
representation underscores the importance of Islamic education at the national
level and its status as a strategic issue for both the state and society.

Strengthening
Islamic Education

The meeting comes
amid growing interest by the state and Islamic institutions in strengthening
the Islamic education sector, considering it a pivotal tool for building aware
and cohesive generations capable of contributing to societal development and
enhancing long-term stability.
