President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the "Khiruddin Barbaros Mosque" in the Lütfi Kırdar neighborhood on the European side of Istanbul, and performed Friday prayers there after its official opening.
The mosque is named after the Ottoman naval commander, Khiruddin Barbaros, who led his troops to conquer the Bosphorus Strait from the Lütfi Kırdar area.
During the opening ceremony, President Erdogan mentioned that the mosque can accommodate 20,000 worshippers, with the covered section holding 11,000 worshippers and the open section accommodating 9,000 worshippers.
