Report: Muslims and Black People Face Systematic Housing Discrimination

The National
Observatory on Discrimination and Racism, affiliated with the German
government, has revealed the existence of systematic discrimination against
Muslims and Black residents in Germany concerning housing opportunities and
living conditions.

This was highlighted
in its latest report titled “Inequality in Living, Racism, and Housing
Conditions,” presented at a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

According to the
report, which was based on a survey of 9,512 participants, Muslims, Black
people, and others with non-German backgrounds face more precarious housing
conditions compared to Germans and encounter repeated discrimination both when
searching for housing and within their neighborhoods.

The report noted
that individuals from these groups live in poorer and more challenging
environments and receive less stable rental contracts. It emphasized that these
experiences are not isolated cases but reflect a widespread structural problem,
where economic conditions intersect with racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Tae Joon Kim,
coordinator of the team that prepared the report, stressed that housing is a
fundamental human need that ensures protection, stability, and social
integration. He added, “Housing in Germany is not only insufficient but
also distributed inequitably.”

According to the
survey results, nearly 50% of Muslims and Black people in Germany believe that
their chances of obtaining adequate housing are lower compared to others.
