Jordanians Participate in a
Hunger Strike in Solidarity with Gaza
Amid the escalating humanitarian tragedy in
the Gaza Strip under siege, starvation, and aggression, the network “We Are All
Gaza… We Are All Palestine” chose to express its rejection of the aggression in
a different manner, going beyond conventional statements and demonstrations, by
launching what it called a “voluntary hunger.”
The network announced the global hunger
strike campaign as a form of protest aimed at holding the international
community accountable for its moral and humanitarian responsibilities, at a
moment when silence is no longer an acceptable option, according to the
organizers of the campaign.
In Jordan, the solidarity movement
manifested itself most strongly, with nine political parties joining the
campaign alongside the Jordanian Writers’ Association. They opened their
headquarters in Amman and several governorates to citizens wishing to participate,
in a move considered a clear message to break the international silence and
paralysis and to awaken global conscience regarding the tragedy in Gaza.
Broad Political Participation
The participating parties represented a wide
spectrum of political orientations, starting from the Islamic Action Front and
the Workers’ Party, passing through the Communist Party and the Democratic
People’s Party, and extending to civil and nationalist parties—indicating an
exceptional consensus on the Palestinian cause as a unifying national priority.
The choice of the strike’s date was not
coincidental. The first day of the event coincided with the 42nd anniversary of
the Sabra and Shatila massacre in 1982, one of the most heinous crimes
committed against Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, in an attempt to link Gaza’s
present to the Palestinian diaspora’s past, and to emphasize that the tragedy
continues and that the nation’s wounded memory remains alive.
The second day of the hunger strike,
scheduled for the beginning of the third week of this month in front of the
United Nations headquarters in Amman, will mark the culmination of the
campaign. A statement will be delivered to the UN Secretary-General, in
parallel with similar activities in several countries, sending a message that
what is happening in Gaza is an international humanitarian issue, not merely a
local or regional matter.
Israeli occupation forces, supported by the
United States, are waging a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, which has,
according to preliminary statistics, resulted in over 64,000 martyrs, more than
164,000 wounded, over 9,000 missing, along with famine that has claimed
hundreds of lives. Meanwhile, more than two million Palestinians are
experiencing forced displacement and widespread destruction.
