India Uses AI to Demonize
Muslims and Incite Hatred
India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
has faced widespread accusations of demonizing Muslims and publicly inciting
hatred after releasing an AI-generated video targeting the Muslim minority in
northern Assam, which is set to hold parliamentary elections next year.
The ruling party used artificial
intelligence to produce the video and shared it on the official BJP Assam
account on X, depicting Muslims as illegal immigrants seizing government land
in the state.
The video shows men wearing traditional
religious attire and women in hijabs or burqas inside key government sites such
as airports, stadiums, and tea plantations. Critics of the video described it
as incitement to violence and religious hatred, an attempt to win voters’
support along communal lines.
Additionally, the video linked the
opposition Congress Party and its local leader Gaurav Gogoi to Pakistan,
showing the Pakistani flag alongside a speech by Rahul Gandhi, suggesting
political defamation and accusations of treason.
Hyderabad Member of Parliament Asaduddin
Owaisi commented that the video is “disgusting” and exposes the ruling party’s
ideology, which views the presence of Muslims in India as a problem. Similarly,
Congress spokesperson Lavanya Bhal Jain described the video as racist,
emphasizing that the BJP follows a “divide and rule” policy.
Indian academic Abhrovanand described the
public incitement of hatred against Muslims by the ruling party as “frightening
and an explicit call for violence.”
Since coming to power in Assam in 2016, the
BJP has sought to win the support of the Hindu majority through policies
considered hostile to Muslims.
Direct accusations have also been leveled
against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for spreading hate speech. A report by
Human Rights Watch revealed that he used anti-Islamic expressions in 110 out of
173 speeches during the 2024 election campaign.
