Artificial Intelligence Fuels
Extremism and Hatred Against Muslims and Migrants in the UK

A study submitted to the UK Parliament’s
Home Affairs Committee has revealed that far-right groups are using
AI-generated images and videos to amplify hate speech against Muslims and
migrants, according to The Independent
.

The study, conducted by the London School of
Economics, analyzed over 600 social media posts, particularly from far-right
groups such as “Britain First” and “Invasion Europe
.”

The findings showed that AI-supported
content, which reinforces negative stereotypes about Muslims, achieves up to
30% higher reach and engagement compared to other posts
.

The fake images and videos included
unrealistic depictions of Muslims threatening residents or creating chaos,
contributing to the rise of extremism that led to violent riots in Southport
last year. This followed the spread of a false report claiming that the
perpetrator of a mass stabbing of children in the town was a Muslim asylum
seeker, which was later proven untrue
.

The study also noted that social media
algorithms prioritize divisive content, increasing the spread of hate and
helping normalize AI-generated racist and Islamophobic imagery online
.

Dr. Beatriz Lopez, the lead researcher of
the study, urged the UK government to implement stricter regulations and
suggested that Ofcom establish a specialized unit to monitor AI-driven
extremism
.

Although platforms such as TikTok and X
(formerly Twitter) have announced rules against AI-generated hate speech and
misinformation, the report criticized the widespread circulation of undetected
extremist content, warning of its severe real-world consequences
.

Moreover, fake images and videos have fueled
anti-immigration protests in the UK and have been used to justify attacks on
mosques and asylum seeker centers, resulting in violence across several cities
.

In light of these concerns, organizations
like the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) have called for reforms to
platform policies and algorithms, highlighting that the UK has seen a worrying
acceleration in violent extremism targeting Muslims and migrants, posing a
threat to national security
.
