Rising
Islamophobia in the UK: 27 Attacks on Mosques During Summer 2025

Recent official data
has revealed a concerning increase in attacks on mosques across the UK during
the summer of 2025, with at least 27 incidents documented nationwide,
indicating a widening hostility toward Muslims.

The first report
issued by the British Muslim Trust (BMT), a government-appointed body
monitoring such incidents, is titled “Summer of Division: Escalating Hatred
Against Muslims Across the Country”. It describes the situation as an early
warning of a growing threat to the safety and security of British Muslims.

Attacks
and Symbols Used

The attacks were
recorded between July and October and included deliberate arson, projectile
throwing, property vandalism, hanging of crosses and flags, and the spreading
of hate slogans on walls.

The timing of the
assaults coincided with nationalist campaigns such as “Raise the Flags” and
“Unite the Kingdom,” which the report links to anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim
rhetoric.

BMT data showed that
41% of the incidents involved the use of crosses, UK flags, or Christian
slogans aimed at intimidation, while 26% involved direct violence or vandalism,
including window smashing and physical assaults.

The report also
noted that 15% of the attacks involved graffiti and verbal abuse, and 11% were
online harassment, reflecting the extension of hate speech from digital spaces
into real-world actions.

Geographical
Distribution of Attacks

No single area was a
focal point, but some cities, such as Watford, experienced three attacks over
five days, while incidents were repeated in Birkenhead and Epsom. In Glasgow,
the phrase “Scots First” was scrawled on the central mosque’s walls.

Escalation
of Violence Over the Summer

The report
highlighted a rapid escalation of attacks, rising from a single incident in
July to nine attacks in September and October, with assaults shifting from
isolated symbolic acts to organized physical violence and public intimidation,
using nationalist and religious symbols.

Wajid Akhtar,
Secretary-General of the British Islamic Council, noted that these incidents
are linked to increasing collective accusations and the distortion of Muslims’
image in the media and politics.

Community
and Mosque Responses

Muslim women and the
elderly reported a growing sense of insecurity, while community leaders spoke
of a palpable increase in fear and isolation.

Some mosques
attempted to raise UK flags inside their buildings as a precautionary measure.
However, the report linked the rise in attacks to extremist nationalist
rhetoric, warning of a transition from symbolic hostility to endangering lives.

Report
Recommendations

·
Provide
rapid and robust support to victims, improve police response, and ensure
effective information sharing.

·
Offer
funding and security protection for mosques, particularly smaller ones.

·
Coordinate
efforts among the government, police, and civil society, integrating places of
worship into community safety plans.

·
Invest
in community cohesion and education programs to combat anti-Muslim hatred and
foster mutual understanding.

Aqeela Ahmed, CEO of
the British Muslim Trust, emphasized that the evidence points to a dangerous
rise in anti-Muslim hatred, stressing the urgent and sustained need for action
to ensure that the UK’s four million Muslims feel safe and fully included.

Official
Statistics

Government figures
showed that hate crimes against Muslims rose by 19% in the year ending March
2025, while Tell Mama recorded the highest number of Islamophobic incidents in
its history in 2024, with 6,313 cases—a 165% increase over two years.

Earlier in December,
40 Labour MPs and independent MPs sent a letter to the Housing Minister urging
the adoption of an official definition of Islamophobia, a request the
government has yet to resolve.
