On Saturday evening,
\nSheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani Hall at the headquarters of the
\nInternational Union of Muslim Scholars hosted the first seminar of the Council
\nof His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Ali Mohiuddin Al-Qaradaghi, President of the Union,
\nas part of a new series of sessions for the current season. The event was
\nattended by a large gathering of scholars, professors, researchers, and
\nstudents of Islamic knowledge<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Major Challenge<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The seminar bore a
\nhighly significant title: \u201cThe Backwardness of the Islamic Ummah: Its Causes,
\nEffects, and Ways of Addressing It.\u201d It focused on discussing the most
\nprominent challenges facing the Ummah and how its points of weakness can be
\naddressed in order to advance the levels of science, values, and knowledge<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

His Eminence
\nemphasized that backwardness is not absolute but relative, depending on a
\ncomparison between the current reality and the optimal level that the Ummah
\ncould reach across various fields<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Manifestations and Causes of Backwardness<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The seminar
\naddressed manifestations of backwardness as revealed by recent studies and
\nstatistics, including poverty levels and weak spending on scientific research.
\nIt stressed that economic growth alone is insufficient to drive progress;
\nrather, it requires adopting a comprehensive development theory as proposed by
\nIslamic thought, with a focus on education, knowledge, and values<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

His Eminence also
\ndiscussed the stages of backwardness, beginning with absolute backwardness in
\nall fields, moving through relative backwardness in specific areas, unplanned
\nand random movement that fails to achieve clear goals, and finally
\none-directional movement under the control of a despot<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Lessons from History<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The Sheikh
\nhighlighted the factors that contributed to the European renaissance,
\nexplaining how the Islamic Ummah can benefit from these lessons while relying
\non the rich sources of knowledge it possesses<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

He stressed the
\nnecessity of addressing backwardness through the Fiqh al-Mizan (the
\njurisprudence of balance), which harmonizes between religion and worldly life
\nin order to achieve genuine development<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\nconclusion of the seminar, His Eminence opened the floor for dialogue with

\ncountries compared to their situation a hundred years ago, despite economic and

\nconcluded amid wide appreciation from the attendees, who affirmed that these
\nsessions represent a vital platform for reshaping the developmental vision of
\nthe Islamic Ummah and opening horizons for constructive dialogue on genuine
\npaths to advancing science, knowledge, and values<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
