Thousands of Muslims Displaced in Assam, India, for Project
\nLinked to Modi-Aligned Billionaire<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Indian authorities have displaced around
\n10,000 Muslims in the Dhubri district of Assam state in northeastern India,
\nafter demolishing the homes of approximately 2,000 families starting last
\nSunday. The displacement aims to make way for a thermal power plant project run
\nby a group owned by billionaire Gautam Adani, a close associate of Prime
\nMinister Narendra Modi.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

During the eviction operations, clashes
\nerupted between residents and security forces, who used batons to disperse the
\nprotesters.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This move has drawn condemnation from
\nMuslim lawmakers and opposition figures, who described it as \u201cillegal,\u201d
\nespecially in light of a prior suspension of evictions by the High Court in
\nGuwahati.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Claims of Targeting Muslims<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Residents stated that they had been
\nliving in the area for decades without any previous government asking them to
\nleave. They affirmed that the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government
\nis expelling them “because they are Muslims.”<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

While officials claimed that eviction
\nnotices were distributed before July 6 under the Assam Land and Revenue
\nRegulation Act of 1886, they noted that each landless family would receive
\n50,000 rupees, with a promise to resettle them in the \u201cBhuyejer Alga\u201d village
\nwithin the Athani revenue circle.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Harsh Criticism and Accusations of Collusion<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Muslim MP Rakibul Hussain described the
\noperation as \u201cbrutal and illegal,\u201d stating: \u201cWhat is happening is inhumane and
\nviolates the constitution and the law. The government is acting on the orders
\nof billionaire Adani.\u201d He added, \u201cThe Prime Minister lost his mind when Adani\u2019s
\nson visited the area,\u201d and \u201cpoor families were expelled without warning, in
\nblatant violation of the court\u2019s orders.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, regional MP Akhil Gogoi, who
\nwas detained while trying to meet with the affected families, accused the
\ngovernment of using the evictions to win Hindu votes, asserting that \u201cthe BJP
\ngovernment targets minorities simply because they are Muslims.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Government\u2019s Defense: \u2018Eviction Was Peaceful\u2019<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Assam\u2019s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa
\nSarma defended the operation, saying: \u201cIt was a massive operation and we
\nexpected resistance, but 90% of the people cooperated; the issue was limited to
\nonly 10%.\u201d He added: \u201cThere is no such thing as humanitarian eviction. If
\npeople don\u2019t vacate the land after receiving notices, bulldozers will move in.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The International Union of Muslim
\nScholars is closely monitoring the situation of Muslims in India with deep
\nconcern. It has repeatedly called in official statements and declarations for
\nan end to exclusionary and discriminatory policies, urging respect for the
\nconstitutional and human rights of Muslim minorities and holding the Indian
\ngovernment responsible for these repeated violations.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
