Union of Islamic Associations in Burkina Faso Issues Urgent Call

The Union of Islamic Associations in
\nBurkina Faso has issued a statement urging citizens to avoid hate speech and
\nextremist rhetoric that threaten public peace and national stability.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The statement called for a ban on the
\nexchange of insults and offensive language, and rejected remarks that mock
\nreligious symbols or describe Islamic outreach organizations in ways that
\nincite discord and tension among the various components and sects of society.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This statement followed the conclusion of
\na three-day scholarly forum held in the capital, Ouagadougou, under the theme
\n\u201cEthics of Islamic Discourse in the Digital Age.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The forum addressed the challenges posed
\nby hate and violent rhetoric spread by some social media influencers, and the
\nresulting strife among religious currents in the country.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement, Adama Sankad\u00e9, Executive
\nSecretary of the Union, affirmed that things would not return to how they were
\nbefore, urging everyone to embrace the ethics of true Islam and adopt discourse
\nthat strengthens social cohesion and unity.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Union also warned that preachers and
\nreligious speakers operating outside the officially recognized regulatory
\nframework would face penalties that could amount to criminal offenses.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This forum comes a month after
\nTransitional President Ibrahim Traor\u00e9 called for the removal of extremism from
\nIslam, emphasizing that extremist and terrorist groups do not represent Islam \u2014
\na religion that advocates tolerance, moderation, peace, and stability.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2024, Islamic associations in
\nBurkina Faso had already issued a warning about the rise of extremism and hate
\nspeech that threaten unity among followers of different Islamic schools of
\nthought, amidst a surge in terrorist attacks carried out by groups claiming to
\nrepresent jihad and Islam, targeting the government and those cooperating with
\nit.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
