In the world\u2019s most
\npopulous Muslim-majority country, religion is playing an increasingly
\nsignificant role in addressing climate change. The city of Garut, in western
\nJava, has announced the construction of its first twin eco-mosques, whose walls
\nwill be made from 12 tons of recycled plastic and 24 tons of rice husks<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The project is
\nsupported by the local “Pesantren Walis Asih” Institute, which has
\nsuccessfully persuaded around 200 neighboring families to adopt a \u201czero waste\u201d
\napproach and aims to cultivate a generation of \u201cpeace and change makers<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The institute\u2019s
\ndirector, Irfan Amali, stated that transforming waste in this manner \u201cwill
\ncontribute to saving thousands of trees<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Indonesia, where
\nMuslims make up approximately 88% of the 284 million population, faces
\nincreasing climate challenges, including rising sea levels and devastating
\nstorms, alongside a massive waste crisis of over 11.3 million tons of
\nnon-recycled waste in 2024, according to the Ministry of Environment<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Green Mosques and
\nEco-Friendly Models<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The country has
\nwitnessed a notable shift in environmental behaviors within Islamic practices
\nsince the beginning of this decade<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Jakarta\u2019s Istiqlal
\nMosque, the largest in Indonesia, has become a low-carbon model after being
\nequipped with solar panels and a water recycling system. In 2022, it received a
\n\u201cgreen\u201d rating from the World Bank and hosted the first Islamic conference for a
\n\u201cSustainable Indonesia<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time,
\nthe Islamic Studies Center at the National University launched the
\n\u201cEco-Pesantren\u201d program to integrate environmental issues into curricula<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Activist Rahma
\nShafiana from Greenpeace affirmed that the \u201cGreen Islam\u201d movement has gained
\nsignificant momentum in recent years, noting the support of Minister of
\nReligious Affairs Nasruddin Umar, who also serves as the Grand Imam of Istiqlal
\nMosque, due to his progressive vision on climate issues<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

She added that the
\norganization seeks to promote funding for renewable projects through Islamic
\nfinancial instruments and zakat<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Islamic Financing
\nand Green Bonds<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Indonesia is also a
\npioneer in issuing sovereign green bonds since 2018, with a cumulative value of
\n$6.9 billion, despite some fossil-fuel-related projects continuing to receive
\nfunding from public and private Islamic banks, which apply less stringent environmental
\nand social standards<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Role of Major
\nIslamic Organizations and Mining Controversy<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Environmental
\nprotection is supported by the country\u2019s two largest Islamic organizations,
\nNahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, which together have over 70 million members
\nand play prominent roles in education, health, and social work<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

However, controversy
\narose after President Joko Widodo, shortly before the end of his term in June
\n2024, granted these organizations coal mining concessions, citing financial
\nempowerment, a decision that drew widespread criticism<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In January,
\nNahdlatul Ulama established a company to manage 50,000 hectares of these
\nconcessions in eastern Borneo<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth noting
\nthat the Indonesian Ulema Council, the country\u2019s highest religious authority,
\nissued a fatwa in 2011 prohibiting environmentally destructive mining
\nactivities<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

However, a video
\nreleased by Greenpeace in June 2025 revealed the scale of nickel exploitation
\nin the biodiverse-rich West Papua archipelago, sparking widespread debate<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
