{"id":58435,"date":"2020-12-02T11:56:17","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T11:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iumsonline.cloud\/2020\/12\/02\/muslim-scholars-urge-india-to-reverse-citizenship-law\/"},"modified":"2020-12-02T11:56:17","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T11:56:17","slug":"muslim-scholars-urge-india-to-reverse-citizenship-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iumsonline.cloud\/en\/2020\/12\/02\/muslim-scholars-urge-india-to-reverse-citizenship-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Muslim Scholars Urge India to Reverse Citizenship Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Union for Muslims Scholars (IUMS) on Sunday called on the Indian government to retreat from a controversial citizenship law, warning that the law would fuel hatred against Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the IUMS said it was closely following the situation of Muslims in India with great concern following the passage of the citizenship law.<\/p>\n<p>It said the legislation would expose Muslims to various forms of restrictions and oppression, going on to call on the UN and the Islamic world to stand up against the law.<\/p>\n<p>The Citizenship Amendment Act, passed last week, grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Christians from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh but blocks naturalization for Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Muslim leaders believe that the new law would be linked to the National Register of Citizens &mdash; an exercise, where every citizen would be asked to prove afresh Indian citizenship.
