Rising Discrimination Against Muslims in India: Mass Deportation

Human
\nRights Watch has revealed that Indian authorities have forcibly deported
\nhundreds of Bengali Muslims to Bangladesh in recent weeks, in a blatant
\nviolation of legal safeguards and due process, under the pretext of
\n“combating irregular migration<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\norganization noted that among those deported were Indian citizens from states
\nbordering Bangladesh \u2014 a dangerous indicator of escalating religious and ethnic
\ndiscrimination against the Muslim community within India<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since
\nMay 2025, the Indian government, led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata
\nParty (BJP), has intensified mass expulsions, targeting in particular poor
\nBengali-speaking migrant workers<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Human
\nRights Watch documented harrowing testimonies from deportees who reported being
\nbeaten and threatened while in custody, and being forcibly pushed across the
\nborder \u2014 despite some of them presenting documents proving their Indian
\ncitizenship<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According
\nto reports from the Bangladeshi Border Guard, more than 1,500 men, women, and
\nchildren were expelled between May 7 and June 15, including around 100 Rohingya
\nrefugees \u2014 a clear violation of the principle of non-refoulement, which
\nprohibits returning individuals to places where they may face danger<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\norganization stated that authorities in the states of Assam, Uttar Pradesh,
\nMaharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, and Rajasthan have carried out intensive
\ncampaigns targeting Bengali Muslims \u2014 most of them impoverished migrant workers
\n\u2014 and expelled them without thorough investigations into their legal status.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Human
\nrights groups have condemned the lack of transparency and the blatant violation
\nof both domestic and international human rights standards. They warned that
\nsuch measures legitimize discrimination and exclusion under security and
\npolitical pretenses, putting thousands of lives at risk and undermining India\u2019s
\nhistoric reputation as a protector of refugees and persecuted minorities.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Human
\nRights Watch and other advocacy groups have called on Indian authorities to
\nimmediately halt forced deportations and to ensure the right to appeal and
\naccess to legal protections, especially for the most vulnerable groups \u2014
\nincluding women, children, the elderly, and refugees.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
