A senior
\nhealth official in Bangladesh has warned of a widespread outbreak of Hepatitis
\nC among Rohingya refugees in the Cox\u2019s Bazar camps, revealing that one in five
\nadults has tested positive for active infection.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nremarks to The Daily Star, Dr. Sarwar Jahan, the medical coordinator at the
\nOffice of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, stated that
\napproximately 100,000 adult refugees are currently infected\u2014a situation he
\ndescribed as \u201cextremely serious\u201d and posing a threat of transmission to local
\npopulations.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According
\nto the newspaper, over 70% of the nearly half a million adult refugees in the
\ncamps have been tested, with results showing that 30% carry the virus and 20%
\nhave active infections.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nresponse to these alarming figures, a treatment program targeting 100,000 cases
\nis underway, with plans to treat 50,000 individuals by 2026.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Medical
\ndata also revealed that 2.3% of the local population in the Ukhiya and Teknaf
\nareas are infected, compared to the national average of 1.1%, further
\nheightening concerns about the virus spreading beyond the camps.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.
\nJahan emphasized the need to raise awareness about safe medical practices,
\nincluding blood screening and avoiding the reuse of syringes and razors.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nreport also highlighted personal stories of suffering, including that of a
\nrefugee named Hasina, who fled with her family to Bangladesh ten months ago.
\nShe discovered her infection during childbirth in Myanmar in 2020, likely due
\nto unsafe medical procedures such as untested blood transfusions or
\ncontaminated injections. Recent tests confirmed that she and two of her
\nchildren are infected.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another
\nrefugee, Shamsul Islam, expressed deep concern about his children contracting
\nthe disease, which both he and his wife are battling, amid the growing outbreak
\nwithin the camps.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Data
\nshows that M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (Doctors Without Borders) screened 30,000
\nadults in the camps between 2020 and 2024, diagnosing 17,000 with the disease.
\nOver 10,000 of them successfully completed treatment with a 95% success rate.
\nThe organization plans to treat an additional 30,000 patients next year across
\nthree hospitals serving nine camps.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In a
\nrelated development, the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
\nreported a significant outbreak of Hepatitis A among refugees in the early
\nmonths of this year, compounding the already severe health challenges in the
\ncamps.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

More
\nthan one million Rohingya refugees reside in the Cox\u2019s Bazar camps, which the
\nUnited Nations considers the world\u2019s largest refugee settlement. These refugees
\nfled Myanmar amid a genocidal campaign launched by the Myanmar military in
\n2017, with displacement continuing due to ongoing fighting between government
\nforces and the Arakan Army. Reports continue to emerge of sieges, killings,
\nproperty destruction, and forced recruitment affecting the Rohingya population
\non both sides of the conflict.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
