Tens of Thousands Cross Sydney Harbour Bridge in Mass Protest

Tens of
\nthousands of protesters defied heavy rain and strong winds on Sunday, August 3,
\nand marched across the iconic Harbour Bridge in Sydney, Australia, in a massive
\ndemonstration demanding an end to the war and aggression on Gaza, the lifting
\nof the siege, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nprotest, held under the banner “Walk for Humanity,” reflected the
\ngrowing public rejection of the aggression on Gaza and the policies of
\nstarvation and genocide.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Participants
\nheld up cooking pots to symbolize the hunger faced by residents of the besieged
\nGaza Strip, waved Palestinian flags, and chanted slogans such as “We are
\nall Palestinians,” “Freedom for Palestine,” and “Ceasefire
\nnow.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nmarch saw the participation of prominent figures, including WikiLeaks founder
\nJulian Assange and former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Senator
\nMehreen Faruqi delivered a speech in which she described the march as
\n\u201chistoric,\u201d calling for the imposition of the strongest sanctions on the
\nZionist occupation, and accusing its forces of committing massacres against
\ncivilians in Gaza.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Before
\nthe march, the New South Wales Police and local government attempted to block
\nthe protest from crossing the bridge, citing security concerns. However, the
\nSupreme Court ruled in favor of allowing the demonstration. Heavy security
\nforces were deployed in both Sydney and Melbourne, which also witnessed a
\nsimilar protest.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

For his
\npart, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the Zionist
\noccupation\u2019s refusal to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza and its killing of
\ncivilians is “indefensible.” He reiterated his support for a
\ntwo-state solution, although he has not formally recognized the State of
\nPalestine.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Protesters
\ncarried banners bearing the names of thousands of Palestinian children martyred
\nin Gaza since the outbreak of the war in October 2023. Meanwhile, Labor MP Ed
\nHusic called on his government to recognize the State of Palestine.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
