Record Rise in
\nIslamophobia Incidents in Australia<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Aftab Malik, Australia\u2019s Special
\nEnvoy for Combating Islamophobia, announced that anti-Muslim incidents have
\nseen a \u201csharp increase\u201d across the country since the outbreak of the Israeli
\naggression on the Gaza Strip in October 2023.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Malik submitted his first report
\nto the government on Friday, including a comprehensive set of recommendations
\nto review counter-terrorism laws and procedures, with the aim of investigating
\nthe potential existence of discrimination against Muslims.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The report, which spans 60 pages
\nand contains 54 recommendations, also called for a wide-ranging inquiry to
\nunderstand the motivations behind Islamophobia and its impact on social
\ncohesion and government policies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Malik told reporters that
\n\u201cIslamophobia in Australia persists, often ignored or denied, but it has not
\nbeen adequately addressed.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He added that anti-Islam
\nsentiment has become deeply rooted since the September 11, 2001 attacks, noting
\nthat personal Islamophobic incidents have risen by 150%, while online attacks
\nhave increased by 250% since October 7, 2023.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
\nemphasized the importance of taking the recommendations seriously, stating that
\ntargeting individuals based on their religious beliefs \u201cis not only an attack
\non them but an attack on our core values.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He affirmed that \u201cAustralians
\nmust feel safe in their own country, and hatred and bias that fuel Islamophobia
\nand societal division must be eradicated.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The government has recorded a
\nnoticeable rise in Islamophobic and anti-Semitic incidents since the beginning
\nof the war between Israel and Hamas.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Gillian
\nSegal, the Special Envoy for Combating Anti-Semitism, issued her first report
\ntwo months ago, emphasizing the need to protect Jewish students and review
\nuniversity policies related to government funding.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the 2021 census,
\nMuslims constitute approximately 3.2% of Australia\u2019s population.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
