India\u2019s Supreme Court on Monday suspended
\nseveral provisions of the new Waqf law, which has sparked widespread
\ncontroversy among the country\u2019s Muslim community, amid allegations that the
\ngovernment is attempting to strengthen its control over Waqf properties<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

According to Anadolu Agency, citing Indian
\nnewspapers, the court rejected a petition to annul the law entirely, instead
\ntemporarily halting certain provisions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The suspended measures included granting
\nlocal administrators the authority to decide on Waqf property ownership and
\npermitting the establishment of Waqfs for individuals who have been proven
\nMuslim for at least five years<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the court upheld the
\nrequirement for Waqfs to be registered on a central portal, emphasizing that
\nfinal determinations regarding property status remain under the jurisdiction of
\nWaqf courts and higher courts. It also approved limiting non-Muslim members on
\nWaqf boards to no more than four on the central board and three on local
\nboards, while affirming that senior officials on these boards must be Muslims<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Indian government had announced in April
\nthat the law would take effect following its passage in Parliament and
\npresidential approval\u2014a move described by Islamic organizations and opposition
\nlawmakers as \u201ca direct attack on Muslims and their religious rights,\u201d prompting
\nlegal challenges<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The amended law seeks to broaden the central
\ngovernment\u2019s authority over the inspection and administration of Islamic Waqfs,
\nincluding religious, educational, and charitable institutions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Since March, the law has triggered
\nwidespread protests among India\u2019s Muslims, who have called for its repeal and
\nthe protection of their Waqf rights<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
