A German administrative court in the city of
\nDarmstadt recently rejected an objection filed by a veiled woman after her
\napplication for a position as a judge or public prosecutor in the state of
\nHesse was denied<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The court ruled that the decision by Hesse\u2019s
\nMinistry of Justice to reject the applicant\u2019s request was \u201ccorrect,\u201d noting
\nthat the wearing of any religious attire by judges or public prosecutors
\nconflicts with the principle of religious and ideological neutrality within
\njudicial institutions<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The court emphasized that the possibility to
\nappeal the decision remains available<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The case dates back to the job interview,
\nduring which the applicant\u2014a Muslim who considers the headscarf a religious
\nobligation\u2014stated that she was unwilling to remove it. This led the appointment
\ncommittee to reject her application, viewing the headscarf as a \u201creligious
\nsymbol,\u201d after which the case proceeded to the judiciary<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
