Austrian Parliament Bans Headscarves for
\nGirls Under 14: A Stark Discrimination Against Muslims<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

On Thursday, the Austrian Parliament approved a bill
\nbanning the wearing of headscarves in schools for girls under the age of 14, a
\nmove that has sparked criticism from human rights activists and experts, who
\ndescribed it as discriminatory and deepening societal divisions.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The law was passed by an overwhelming majority, while
\nthe opposition Green Party voted against it, despite warnings regarding its
\nunconstitutionality and targeting of Muslims.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This legislation follows a previous decision by the
\nConstitutional Court to annul a similar 2019 law that prohibited headscarves in
\nelementary schools, which was deemed unconstitutional and discriminatory.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Austrian Minister of Integration Claudia Plakolm
\nstated that the new ban covers “all forms of headscarves that cover the
\nhead according to Islamic tradition” in all schools, and that full
\nimplementation will begin with the start of the new academic year in September.
\nShe described the headscarf as “not a religious practice, but a form of
\noppression.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the far-right Austrian Freedom Party called
\nfor expanding the ban to include all students, teachers, and staff, arguing
\nthat the current law is insufficient.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast, Amnesty International described the law
\nas “a stark form of discrimination against Muslim girls” and “an
\nexpression of anti-Muslim racism.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Angelika Atsinger, director of the women’s rights
\nadvocacy organization AMAZONE, emphasized that the ban “sends a message to
\ngirls that decisions are being made about their bodies, and that this is deemed
\nacceptable.”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The anti-racism organization SOS Mitmensch also
\nopposed the law, while the Islamic Community in Austria firmly rejected
\n“all forms of coercion,” announcing its intention to challenge the
\nlaw before the Constitutional Court. They stressed that the ban violates the
\nfundamental rights and freedoms of children wishing to wear the headscarf
\naccording to their beliefs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

A trial period will begin next February to explain the
\nnew rules to teachers, parents, and children without imposing penalties on
\nviolators. However, in case of repeated violations, fines ranging from \u20ac150 to
\n\u20ac800 (approximately $175 to $940) will be imposed. The government announced
\nthat around 12,000 girls will be affected by the new law.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
