Tunisian Court Issues Harsh Prison
\nSentences Against Ghannouchi and Prominent Opposition Figures<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Tunis Primary Court issued severe
\nsentences in the “Conspiracy 2” case, ranging from 12 to 35 years in
\nprison, with immediate enforcement for defendants residing abroad. The court
\nalso ruled to dismiss charges against one of the accused.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The court sentenced the head of the Ennahda Movement,
\nProfessor Rached Ghannouchi, to 14 years in prison, despite his refusal to
\nappear before the court and his continued boycott of the trials since his
\narrest in April 2023.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ghannouchi has previously received multiple sentences
\nin cases that international human rights organizations have described as
\n\u201cpolitically motivated.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The court also sentenced each of Mahrez Zouari,
\nAbdelkarim Oueididi, senior Ennahda figure Habib Ellouze, and former mayor of
\nZahra, Rayan Hamzaoui, to 12 years in prison.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In absentia, the court sentenced to 35 years in prison
\nwith immediate enforcement: former presidential chief of staff Nadia Akacha;
\nMoaz Ghannouchi, son of the movement’s leader; Adel Daddaa; Rafik Abdessalem;
\nLotfi Zitoun; and journalist Maher Zaid.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The verdicts included subjecting all those convicted
\nto five years of administrative surveillance. The charges relate to \u201cforming
\nand joining a terrorist group, using Tunisian territory to commit terrorist
\ncrimes, recruiting and training individuals, and spreading information that
\nthreatens national security.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Youssef Chahed
\nremains outside the scope of the trial, after appealing the decision to refer
\nhim to the criminal court.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These rulings come months after verdicts were issued
\nin the “Conspiracy 1” case against other prominent political figures,
\nincluding Kamel Ltaief (66), Khayam Turki (48), and Noureddine Bhiri (43),
\namong others.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ghannouchi\u2019s defense team stated that the verdict was
\ndelivered \u201cremotely,\u201d and that their client refused to participate due to the
\n\u201cabsence of fair trial standards,\u201d noting that the rest of the defendants were
\n\u201cprevented from attending and defending themselves.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The team added that the accusations were based on a
\n\u201cfalse report from an anonymous secret witness,\u201d considering the proceedings a
\n\u201cpolitical trial aimed at eliminating opponents of Kais Saied\u2019s regime\u201d since
\nJuly 25, 2021.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They affirmed their continued legal and human rights
\nbattle in defense of Ghannouchi\u2019s freedom and the right to a fair trial that
\nupholds the law and presumption of innocence.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
