The National Council
\nof Imams in Australia announced on Tuesday a significant increase in cases of
\nIslamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred following the shooting incident that took
\nplace in the city of Sydney, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement, the
\ncouncil noted that reported incidents targeting Muslims since December 14 have
\nrisen by nearly 200 percent.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The council
\nexplained that documented incidents included a couple tearing the hijab off a
\nMuslim employee who was assisting people with disabilities onto a bus, the
\nthrowing of eggs at a hijab-wearing woman on her way to work, and spitting
\nattacks against other hijab-wearing women.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The statement
\nconfirmed that the majority of the attacks targeted women and were particularly
\nconcentrated in areas of the city of Sydney.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the
\nsame statement, several mosques and Islamic centers were also subjected to
\nvandalism or serious security incidents.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

For its part, the
\nAustralian police stated that there is no evidence linking the perpetrators of
\nthe Sydney attack to a \u201clarge terrorist cell.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth noting
\nthat the armed attack occurred on December 14 during celebrations of the Jewish
\nholiday of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach in the state of New South Wales. The attack
\nwas carried out by a father and his son, resulting in the deaths of 15 people,
\nincluding one of the attackers.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
