Rising Islamophobia in France

Increasing hostility toward Muslims in
\nFrance raises concerns: Study reveals systemic discrimination and serious
\neffects on youth and religious freedoms<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

A recent study conducted by the Ifop
\nInstitute on behalf of the Grand Mosque of Paris, and exclusively published by
\nLib\u00e9ration, has revealed that hostility toward Muslims in France has reached
\nalarming levels<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The study, which surveyed 1,005 Muslims
\nliving in major cities, exposed systemic, multidimensional discrimination
\ndeeply rooted in French society<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

82%<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>of
\nFrench Muslims stated that hatred against them has become \u201ca widespread
\nphenomenon,\u201d while 66% reported experiencing racist behavior in the past five
\nyears\u2014three times the rate among the general population<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The study highlighted that Muslim youth are
\nthe most affected, with 76% of those under 25 reporting experiences of racism<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It also underscored the religious dimension
\nof discrimination: 50% of those affected believe their religion is the main
\nreason, while 41% of non-practicing Muslims pointed to their religious
\naffiliation as the cause of discriminatory treatment<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The survey further revealed that
\ndiscrimination spans all social classes, including the middle class and
\nprofessionally integrated individuals, and even supposedly safe spaces\u2014such as
\nschools, police services, and public services\u2014are not immune<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Access to employment and housing has been
\nsignificantly impacted, with 51% reporting discrimination when seeking jobs and
\n46% when applying for housing, compared to only 7% and 6% among non-Muslims<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Concern is widespread among French Muslims
\ndue to this phenomenon: 64% fear restrictions on their religious freedom, 51%
\nfear physical assault, rising to 66% among veiled women<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The study also showed declining trust in
\nofficial institutions, with 66% not considering filing a complaint and even
\nfewer turning to associations or mosques for support<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Grand Imam of the Paris Mosque,
\nChems-Eddine Hafiz, sounded the alarm, calling for Muslims\u2019 rights to be
\n\u201cplaced at the forefront of the fight against Islamophobia,\u201d considering it a
\nmatter of national security and republican cohesion, not merely a social issue<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Hafiz urged concrete measures for monitoring
\nand sanctioning discrimination in employment, housing, and public services,
\nalong with enhanced training for government employees<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This study comes amid rising tensions
\nfollowing unfortunate incidents, including the killing of Abou Bakr Ciss\u00e9 at a
\nmosque in the Gard region in April, the attack on Hicham Merai in May in the
\nVar region, and the placement of pig heads in front of nine mosques in the
\n\u00cele-de-France region in September<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Hafiz emphasized that these acts reflect a
\nhatred that is sometimes exploited by foreign powers to weaken France, making
\nit a strategic national issue rather than merely a social one<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The study also highlighted the
\nradicalization of public discourse about Islam, which contributes to
\nlegitimizing and fueling this discrimination<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In response to the survey, political
\nscientist Fran\u00e7ois Kraus from the Ifop Institute noted that hostility toward
\nMuslims is the main factor affecting Muslims\u2019 experiences in all aspects of
\ntheir lives, preferring this term over \u201cIslamophobia\u201d to avoid controversy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
