The Burma Human
\nRights Network reported on Wednesday that Muslims in Myanmar are facing
\nincreasing repression and serious human rights violations, amid the continued
\ngrip of the military on power since the 2021 coup.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The UK-based network
\ncalled on the international community to impose sanctions on the country\u2019s
\nruling military regime, in a statement issued to mark the 77th anniversary of
\nthe United Nations\u2019 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In its statement,
\nthe network said that while 77 years have passed since the adoption of the
\nUniversal Declaration of Human Rights\u2014which affirms every individual\u2019s right to
\nsecurity, dignity, and equality before the law\u2014these principles have been
\nsystematically violated in Myanmar for decades through persecution,
\ndisplacement, and violence carried out by the military with impunity.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Systematic
\nViolations Against Muslims<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The statement noted
\nthat the Myanmar military has committed widespread violations against Muslims,
\nparticularly Rohingya Muslims, as well as other minorities. These abuses
\ninclude forced displacement, denial of citizenship and legal residency, mass
\nkillings, and the destruction of residential areas and places of worship.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It emphasized that
\nviolence by the military junta has escalated markedly since the coup of
\nFebruary 1, 2021, with military attacks leading to the displacement of large
\nnumbers of civilians.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The network pointed
\nout that arbitrary arrests, extortion, torture, and deaths in detention
\ncontinue in the absence of any legal oversight, while civilians are deprived of
\nfood, shelter, and healthcare.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

It added that the
\ngrowing repression against Muslims has not received sufficient international
\nattention, despite broader focus on the violence that followed the coup.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Calls
\nfor Sanctions and International Accountability<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The network stressed
\nthat discriminatory laws and policies have condemned hundreds of thousands of
\nMuslims to live under harsh humanitarian conditions, urging governments to
\nimpose sanctions to prevent the Myanmar military from accessing weapons,
\naviation fuel, and financial resources.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The statement also
\nunderscored the need not to recognize the elections that the military
\nauthorities intend to hold between December of the current year and January
\n2026.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, it
\ncalled on the UN Security Council to refer the Myanmar situation to the
\nInternational Criminal Court, and urged the Association of Southeast Asian
\nNations (ASEAN) to bar Myanmar from participating in all its meetings and to
\nsupport the imposition of sanctions.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The statement
\nhighlighted the importance of neighboring countries\u2014particularly India,
\nThailand, Indonesia, and Bangladesh\u2014developing a comprehensive regional
\nresponse to the refugee crisis, while providing protection and humanitarian and
\nlegal support to displaced persons, and urgently opening cross-border aid
\nchannels.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Ethnic
\nCleansing of Arakan\u2019s Muslims<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The roots of the
\nsuffering of Muslims in Myanmar date back to 2012, when clashes erupted between
\nBuddhists and Muslims in Arakan State, resulting in the killing of thousands of
\npeople, most of them Muslims, and the destruction of hundreds of homes and shops.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

On August 25, 2017,
\nthe Myanmar military and Buddhist nationalists launched a widespread campaign
\nof violence, under the pretext of attacks targeting border posts in the state,
\ntriggering a massive wave of displacement.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the
\nUnited Nations, more than 900,000 people have fled to Bangladesh since August
\n2017 to escape repression and persecution, while international human rights
\norganizations have documented, through satellite imagery, the destruction of
\nhundreds of villages.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The United Nations
\nand international human rights organizations describe what Rohingya Muslims are
\nfacing as ethnic cleansing or genocide.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
